PARISHES

Parishes listed on ePodunk UK are ecclesiastical parishes, which existed for three centuries before the creation of civil parishes in 1832. The ecclesiastical parish centered on the parish church, supervised by clergy.

Until the early 19th century (1837 in England and Wales, 1864 in Ireland and 1855 in Scotland), records of baptism, marriage and burial were kept by the parishes. (Although it's helpful to know the parish name, it's not necessary for an online search.) .)

Whenever possible, ePodunk has associated a parish with one or more historic counties. However, parish boundaries and county boundaries do not necessarily correspond.

Parish registers, recording births, deaths and marriages, can date back as early as the 16th century and are a major resource for genealogical research. A vital publication for finding registers by parish name is the Fillimore Atlas & Index of Parish Registers.

Parish and historic county profiles on ePodunk also provide links to searchable indexes of parish registers on Ancestry.co.uk.
