Bath was a bustling literary center in the 19th century, visited by Longfellow, Hawthorne, Wordsworth, and Dickens.
Charles Dickens found inspiration here for his "Bleak House" character, Boythorn, and his "Old Curiosity Shop" character, Little Nell. Chaucer's Wife of Bath is one of the best-known characters of the Canterbury Tales.
