From The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):
An inland county; bounded on the NW by Northampton, on the NE by Huntingdon, on the E by Cambridge, on the SE and the S by Herts, and on the SW and W by Bucks.
Husbandry employs a larger proportion of the population than in almost any other tract of equal extent in England.
The county-town is Bedford; and the market-towns are Bedford, Dunstable, Ampthill, Biggleswade, Harrold, Leighton-Buzzard, Luton, Potton, Toddington, and Woburn.
