Seaside border community

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town in Northumberland, England. It is in the historic county also called Northumberland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)

The community is on the River Tweed.
Walls and ramparts surround the old town.
Because of its position on the northern bank of the river, the community was a constant focus in battles between the English and the Scots. Control changed hands more than a dozen times before the town finally became English in 1482.
