From The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):

A maritime county; bounded, on the NW, by Somerset; on the NE, by Wilts; on the E, by Hants; on the S, by the English channel; on the W, by Devon.

The seven borough, and Wareham, Wimborne-Minster, Beaminster, Sherborne, Cerne-Abbas, Stalbridge, Swanage, Corfe-Castle, and Milton-Abbas are or were market-towns; and there are about 360 smaller towns, villages, and hamlets.

Also known as Dorsetshire.
