From The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):
A maritime county; bounded, on the N, by Berks, on the E, by Surrey and Sussex; on the S, by the English channel; on the W, by Dorset and Wilts.
The county's name derives from the city of Southampton, which was formerly called "Hamtun."
Also known as Hants, Southamptonshire.
