London reviews & blogs

Capital city of England, and of the UK.

London is in the historic county of Middlesex. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)

The community is on the River Thames.
The City of London is at the core of the administrative area known as Greater London, which also encompasses 32 boroughs.
The city name is believed to derive from pre-Celtic terms for "place at the navigable or unfordable river."
Former and merged names include:
· Londinium
London's flourishing port brought prosperity and growth in the Middle Ages. However, half the population died from the Black Death in 1348-1349.

The city endured despite back-to-back disasters in the 17th century. More than 80,000 people died in the plague of 1665. The following year, the Great Fire destroyed most of the old city.

Tremendous losses were also suffered during World War II, when 30,000 people were killed in bombing attacks.
