London's flourishing port brought prosperity and growth in the Middle Ages. However, half the population died from the Black Death in 1348-1349.
The city endured despite back-to-back disasters in the 17th century. More than 80,000 people died in the plague of 1665. The following year, the Great Fire destroyed most of the old city. Tremendous losses were also suffered during World War II, when 30,000 people were killed in bombing attacks.
