"Cottonopolis"

Manchester is a city in England. It is in the historic county of Lancashire. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)

The community is on the River Irwell.
Major cotton mills began opening in the region in the late 1700s. The cotton industry soon boomed with several technological innovations, including the flying shuttle, spinning jenny and spinning mule. With the growth of the mills, Manchester's population increased ten-fold, from 17,000 in 1760 to 180,000 in 1830.

The importance of the cotton industry has declined since World War II.

Louise Brown, the world's first test-tube baby, was born here in 1978.

Local residents are known as "Mancunians."
Received national attention for a 1996 IRA bombing, which devastated commercial sections of the city.
