Norfolk is an historic county of England. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)

From The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):

A maritime county in the E of England; bounded, on the NW, by the Wash, which divides it from Lincolnshire; on the N and the NE, by the North Sea; on the SE, by Breydon-water and the river Waveney, which divide it from Suffolk; on the S, by the river Waveney, a short artificial line and the river Little Ouse, which divide it from Suffolk; on the SW and the W, by the rivers Old Welney and Nen, and a short artificial line, which divide it from Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

Quotes:
"The churches in Norfolk are generally large and the towers lofty. . . . Many of them are of the Saxon architecture. They are, almost all (I do not remember an exception) placed on the highest spots to be found near where they stand."
-- Rural Rides
William Cobbett
