The community is at the mouth of the River Plym.
Former and merged names include:
· Sutton
Many famous sailing expeditions began in Plymouth. Sir Frances Drake, Charles Darwin and Captain Cook all sailed from this port.
A historic marker notes the departure of the Mayflower, carrying Pilgrims to America, from here in 1620. The city was heavily bombed by the German Luftwaffe in World War II.
Local ferries provide service to Roscoff, France and Santander, Spain.
