Taunton is the county town of Somerset, England. It is in the historic county also called Somerset. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.) The community is on the River Tone.
Received national attention for a 1978 fire on a sleeper train traveling from Penzance to Paddington, killing 11. When the train stopped here, fire-fighters were hindered by locked doors.
