From The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):
The West Riding comprises 1,709,307 acres; is divided into the boroughs of Bradford, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Halifax, Leeds, Pontefract, Ripon, Sheffield, and Wakefield, and the wapentakes of Agbrigg and Morley, Ainsty, Barkston-Ash, Claro, Osgoldcross, Skyrack, Staincliffe and Ewecross, Staincross, and Strafforth and Pickhill.
Part of the old county of Yorkshire. It was bounded on the north by Westmorland, on the south by Derbyshre, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, on the west by Lancashire and Cheshire and on the east by the East and North Ridings.
