| Northern Ireland > Belfast |
Capital of Northern Ireland Belfast is the county town of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. (It straddles counties Down and Antrim.) The community is on the River Lagan.
Belfast, founded around an ancient fort, grew in the 17th century with settlement by English and Huguenots.
The Titanic launched from Belfast in 1911. The area became more urban and more industrial during the early 19th century. Belfast and surrounding towns replaced Dublin as the center of Protestant economic and cultural life. Hundreds of people died during the German blitz of April 1941. The city was torn by sectarian violence in the 20th century. Catholics tended to settle on the west side of the city, and Protestants on the east.
