"The Walled City"

Derry is a city in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

The community is on the River Foyle.
Also known as Doire, Londonderry.
After the English seized Derry in 1600, James I granted the city to London citizens. It was then renamed Londonderry.

Amelia Earhart landed here after her solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932.

Since the 1960s, when Nationalist sentiments began to grow, the community's official name has been a point of contention.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Derry was an important point of departure for Irish emigrants sailing for America.
Known as "Stroke City," because of its dual Derry/Londonderry name.
Received national attention for the "Bloody Sunday" deaths of 13 people, killed when soldiers fired upon civil rights marchers. (A 14th person died later of injuries.)
Well-known residents have included:
· John Hume, Nobel Peace Prize winner
· Amanda Burton, actress
Annual events include:
· Big Tickle Comedy Festival - 7-16 September 2007
· Feis Doire Cholmcille - 9-13 April 2007

Quotes:
"Some Ulster towns inspired fear the way a man with an ugly face frightens a stranger; their scars implied violence. Derry was a scarred city of broken windows and barricades."
-- The Kingdom by the Sea
Paul Theroux
