Derry
Derry is an historic county of Northern Ireland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Cassell Gazetteer of England and Wales, (1870-72):
A northern maritime county of Ulster, Ir., bounded on the north by Lough Foyle and the Atlantic, on the east by co. Antr. and Lough Neagh, on the south by co. Tyr., and on the west by co. Donegal.
In 1609 the estates of the Irish chiefs were confiscated and granted by the Crown to the Corporation of the City of London and to twelve of the London livery companies, who combined to administer them under the title of the Irish Society. These grants comprised the greater part of the co., and at the present day upwards of a quarter of the entire area is still held by them.
Also known as Londonderry.
