The community is on the River Lagan.
Former and merged names include:
· Lisnagarvey
In 1971, authorities began interning IRA members at a nearby abandoned airfield. The site eventually became the Maze prison. Ten inmates, beginning with Bobby Sands, died in 1981 after lengthy hunger strikes.
Two years later, 38 inmates broke out of the Maze. Half of them were recaptured in days. The prison closed in 2000.
