The community is on the coast, between the Dee and Don rivers.
Former and merged names include:

Oil was discovered here in the 1960s, dramatically reshaping the local economy in the decades since.
Dr. John Arbuthnot, to whom Alexander Pope's famous satirical epistle was addressed, attended school here.
