Aberdeenshire
Aberdeenshire is an historic county of Scotland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
An extensive county on the north-east coast of Scotland; bounded on the north and east by the German ocean; on the south by the counties of Kincardine, Forfar, and Perth; and on the west by Inverness-shire, and Banffshire.
The general character of this county is bleak and uninviting, but there are many marked exceptions from this prevailing cast of scenery, especially in the neighbourhood of Aberdeen, and the larger towns, and along the courses of the large rivers.
Aberdeenshire has long been noted for its woollen manufactures, particularly the knitting of stockings and hose, in which numbers of the common people are constantly employed.
Aberdeenshire contains three royal boroughs, viz. Aberdeen, Kintore, and Inverury; and several handsome towns, as Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Huntly Turriff, and Old Meldrum.
Also known as Aberdeen.
