Argyllshire
Argyllshire is an historic county of Scotland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
An extensive shire, on the western coast of Scotland. It comprehends several large islands, as well as a considerable portion of the mainland.
By the never-to-be-sufficiently-admired spirit of the city of Glasgow...steam-vessels are constantly employed in conveying passengers and goods to and fro, throughout the country, and in transporting the country-produce to market at that city...There is not now a loch, bay, or inlet, but holds a daily, or least commands a weekly, communication with the lowlands and the several districts of the country.
The principal towns are Inverary, which is the county-town, Campbelton, and Oban.
Also known as Argyle, Argyll.
