Caithness
Caithness is an historic county of Scotland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
The most remote and northern county on the mainland of Scotland, forming its north-eastern extremity, is divided from the county of Sutherland on the south-west and west by a range of mountains and high moory hills, which extend from the Ord of Caithness on the south, to the shores of the North sea at Drumholasten.
It is bounded on the south-east and east by the Murray frith and the German ocean; on the north from Duncansby-head ... to Holburn-head, by the Pentland frith, dividing it from the Southern isles of Orkney, an dcontaining the island of Stroma which forms a portion of the shire; and westwards from Holburn-head it is bounded by the North sea.
