Dumfriesshire
Dumfriesshire is an historic county of Scotland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
A large, important, and beautiful county in the south of Scotland...It is bounded on the north by the counties of Lanark, Peebles, Selkirk, and Roxborough; on the east by Cumberland; on the south by the Solway frith; on the south-west by Kirkcudbrightshire; on the west by Kirkcudbrightshire and Ayrshire; and on the north-west by Ayrshire.
Extensive lead-mines, the most productive in Britain, are worked at Wanlockhead on the north-east boundary of the parish of Sanquhar...Gold occurs in the mountains around Wanlockhead, either in veins of quarts, or in the sand washed down by the rivulets.
