Kirkcudbrightshire

From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
Prescriptively called a stewartry, but in every practical and real point of view, a sheriffdom, shire, or county, in the western division of the southern border of Scotland.
It is bounded on the north-west and north by Ayreshire; on the north-east and east by Dumfries-shire; on the south by the Solway frith and the Irish sea; and on the west by Wigtonshire.
Kirkcudbrightshire has two royal burghs, Kirkcudbright and New Galloway, and several considerable villages, - Maxwell town, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Creetown, Dalbeattie, Castle-Douglas, and Dalry.
