Paisley is a town in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It is in the historic county also called Renfrewshire. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.) The community is on the River Cart.
Contrary to widespread belief, the community was not the birthplace of the teardrop pattern that bears its name. When Indian-made shawls with the motif became popular, weavers in other cities, including Paisley, began incorporating the pattern in their fabrics.
