West Lothian
West Lothian is an historic county of Scotland. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)
From The Topographical, Statistical, and Historical Gazetteer of Scotland, 1847:
Linlithgowshire, or West Lothian, lying along the south side of the frith of Forth, nearly midway between the German ocean and the frith of Clyde, has, in a general point of view, a triangular outline.
The county is bounded on the north by the frith of Forth, which divides it from the detached part of Perthshire and from Fifeshire; on the south-east, except at the indentation from Mid-Calder, by the river Almond and its tributary Briech-water, which divide it from Edinburghshire; and on the west by Blairmuckhill-burn, Barbachlawburn, Calder-water, and artificial lines which divide it from Lanarkshire...
Also known as Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire.
