Swansea is a city in Wales. It is in the historic county of Glamorgan. (For more information about the ancient counties of the UK, see the historic counties page and the place types page.)

The community is at the mouth of the River Tawe.
Also known as Abertawe.
The community of Swansea originated around 1099 when a Norman castle was built as an extension of William the Conqueror's empire.

Copper smelting was prosperous in the 18th century. The rise of the metal industry made Swansea into a busy port.

In 1918, Britain's first oil refinery was opened here.

Swansea suffered great damage in World War II. In 1941, approximately 30,000 bombs were dropped on the city in three nights.
